Rende is a small town with a total population slightly exceeding 35 thousand residents. It’s a part of the Calabria region in southern Italy. Thanks to being a seat of the University of Calabria, the number of dwellers doubles and reaches 60.000 if taking into account students. Like many other Italian cities, Rende has a historical city centre and a modern part of the town acting as a business centre. Before the current building explosion, it was a town with a predominantly agricultural economy: a lot of wheat, olives, figs, chestnuts, fruit, vegetables and mulberries were produced for the silk industry. Nowadays, the local economy stands on the shoulders of the University of Calabria. The most important activity in the city of Rende is undoubtedly the University of Calabria, in Arcavacata, which with its nearly 40,000 members is among the largest in the south. The main Calabrian University, in addition to causing the increase of the population domiciled in the territory, constitutes a source of vitality for commerce, construction, and the tertiary sector in the entire urban area of ​​Cosenza. The industrial sector in the region is represented by several small plants (such as "La Liquirizia Zagarese"), 8 brick factories, some paper mills (such as the "Rossi Lasagni"), wood and floor tile industries, the famous "Pignatari", the potters and others. The Industrial Park of Rende is becoming increasingly important, bringing together numerous companies operating in various sectors and located in the industrial area.
