For the past four decades, Leiden has been a university town. Its economy is based on the service sector, majorly on the public service sector (education, healthcare). Nevertheless, no company can go past such an amazing, highly-qualified and enthusiastic talent pool represented in the city. So alongside the demand, the city is slowly growing and upgrading its commercial property. Leiden is a green, eco-friendly city. It is one of the top cycling cities in the Netherlands. The share of the bicycle is 31% of all journeys and 45% of short journeys up to 7.5 kilometres. There are two fast cycle routes between Leiden and The Hague: the Velostrada and the Via 44. Moreover, the environmental zone (area within the canals and the eastern part of the Morsweg) is only accessible to vehicles with a Euroclass IV or higher diesel engines or those that run on gas. Overall, the city offers a high quality of life, great transportation connection, numerous education and job opportunities, which makes it extremely popular with young people.
