Numerous global players are represented with branches and offices in Berlin. The current largest employers are Deutsche Bahn, the Charité University Hospital and the Vivantes Network for Health. Companies in the cultural, media and creative industries, ICT, as well as biotechnology and healthcare, feel particularly at home in the offices in Berlin. The location is also a stronghold for start-ups: a position that will further solidify in the course of the economic upturn in the new federal states and Eastern Europe. Research institutions, technology parks and the institutes of seven universities, as well as more than 40 universities, make Berlin an important location for science. The retail, restaurant and entertainment sectors are concentrated in Berlin Mitte and Berlin Charlottenburg around the nationwide known Kurfürstendamm.
