A street with soul and history
In 1866, the Municipality of Copenhagen wished
to have villas built on Gammelholm. Gammelholm
was divided when the navy moved out
to the new naval shipyard 'Holmen'. But not
many had, in the shadow of the war in 1864, the means to either
subdivide or build in a dignified manner within
the municipality's borders.
Banker Martin Levin, as the only one, had a prominent
2-story palace built, overlooking the inner harbor
and Christianshavn.
Later, the house was expanded with 3 bays facing Havnegade
and 2 bays facing Tordenskjoldsgade, in the same elegant
style inspired by Italian Renaissance. The architect
was J. D. Herholdt.
In 1900, the property was taken over by the butter wholesaler
Lars Emil Bruhn and in 1922 by De Danske Spritfabrikker,
who had their headquarters in the property until
1968. In 2011, Karberghus A/S bought the property and
leased it to Husen Advokater, who used the property
as their headquarters until the summer of 2019.
