Campania occupies a rather small territory and yet, manages to be one of the top three most populated regions in Italy with a population exceeding 6 million inhabitants. Campania boasts access to the Tyrrhenian Sea, borders with 4 other regions and includes a number of islands. The most prominent island is Capri - a world-renewed holiday destination famous for its beaches, parties and luxurious hotels. The capital of the region and another tourist magnet is Naples. The popularity of Campania was ensured 72BC when Vesuvius destroyed the city of Pompey, making it one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Pompey alongside other cultural and architectural heritage of the region annually attract staggering numbers of people. Despite its glory, economically-wise Campania is an unsuccessful Italian region. It manages to produce only about 60% of the average Italian and European GDP. The service sector has a central role in the local market and is responsible for about 600 thousand companies. The rest of the local budget is produced by agriculture(11%) and manufacturing (20%). The region also boasts an extremely low number of people employed in the high-tech industry, which only half the average. Overall, the region of Campania requires some structural changes to improve its economic position in the country.
