Up to half of all office jobs are at risk of being replaced by rapid AI adoption, according to recent labour market studies. Already, one in four jobs is affected by AI - for instance, programmer and graphic designer roles have reportedly declined by over 50% in the last three years.

Office workers at all levels have every reason to fear that their current jobs will be swallowed up - at best transformed, at worst completely eliminated - in the explosive development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

Since OpenAI publicly launched ChatGPT in 2022, pessimists and optimists have argued heatedly about predicting the long-term effects and job consequences of the knowledge-based labour market.

The former warn of potential mass unemployment and societal collapse. Optimists anticipate a new age of extended working hours that will make us more productive and free us to focus on creativity and human interactions.

Bridging these contrasting perspectives, a widely cited forecast from the independent World Economic Forum predicts that AI will eliminate 92 million jobs in the short term. In the long term, however, it is fair to say that artificial intelligence will also be able to generate nearly twice that number, 170 million, of new job opportunities.

On a disaster course

"AI has the potential to eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and increase unemployment to 10-20% over the next one to five years," AI guru Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of the company Anthropic, warns.

"The AI industry and our politicians need to stop wrapping things in cotton wool: We are right now on a disaster course towards mass job losses and mass unemployment in technology, finance, law, consulting, and several other white-collar professions ...!"

Already today, AI-powered automation has taken over office tasks such as data entry, filing, text, and other administra-tive functions. At the same time, automated chatbots and virtual assistants have taken over corporate customer service.

Positions such as medical secretaries, communications professionals, accountants, payroll administrators/assistants, office workers in keyboard roles, and financial administrative staff are now considered at high risk for AI-driven automa-tion and job loss.

earn to use AI

"We humans have historically adapted to technological change, but everyone I've spoken to says the AI revolution is different: it seems faster, broader, and harder to adapt to. The pace of AI development continues to surprise us.

Most people have no idea how fast AI is actually evolving, so I would kindly advise the average job seeker to learn how to use artificial intelligence in their daily practice," Dario Amodei told CNNs," siger Dario Amodei til CNN.

"Currently, companies dedicate 60% of their AI initiatives to job creation and 40% to automation. However, the emphasis on automation is increasing rapidly.

I don't think we can stop the bus. From my position, I can perhaps do a little to steer the technology in a direction where we become aware of the harms but will still be able to achieve the benefits of AI," Dario Amodei adds.

Jobs disappear

Amodei’s AI prediction is alarming, partly because it is communicated by one of the industry’s leading and most influential leaders, and partly because of the scale and scope of the disruption he warns of.

Earlier this year, a World Economic Forum survey found that 41% of employers plan to reduce their workforce as a direct result of AI automation by 2030.

According to a recent study by the World Economic Forum, 41% of employers plan
to reduce their workforce by 2030, due to AI automation.

According to a new study from Goldman Research, the following job types are at the highest risk of being displaced by AI in the coming years: IT programmers, accountants, legal and administrative staff, customer service and telemarketers, proofreaders, editors, and credit analysts.

"Technological advances have historically created more jobs than they have destroyed. Approximately 60% of the U.S. workforce holds jobs that did not exist in 1940 - 85% of employment growth since then has been due to technology-driven job creation," the study points out.  ●
